This ended up being just a little bit longer than I expected it to be. Also a quick aside: I’m just working off vibes on this one y’all.
I don’t have much to share this week. Things are pretty busy recently so I haven’t had much time to sit down, think, and write.
However, I wanted to share a playlist I’ve been adding to for the past year or so. It’s based on the vibes and music from Barbie.
If you scroll through the track list you’ll notice a healthy selection of Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, Sixpence None The Richer, and Alanis Morissette. I also included newer songs that I think fit the vibe. ‘Nice to You’ by Vulfmon and ‘Mamma Mia’ by Austen Weber being prime examples.
The Dichotomy of Barbie
The music of Barbie falls into two categories:
Frail Masculinity: ‘Push’ by Matchbox Twenty
Fun Femininity: ‘Spice up Your Life’ by Spice Girls
I included both of these angles in this playlist and it works surprisingly well. obviously not every song is going to fit into those categories (I wouldn’t call ‘Jumper’ by Third Eye Blind “frail”, but it matches the male-led vocals from the late 90s era).
I don’t think I need to go into detail about fun feminine songs as they’re pretty straight forward. However, I did include Indigo Girl’s ‘Closer to Fine’ since it’s in the movie. So, it’s not just “fun” songs.
… Anyway,
Over time the playlist has become a little more Gilmore Girls then Barbie, but I’m not complaining. If you have any suggestions for songs that fit into this playlist, comment below!
Thanks for Reading!
That’s all for this week, there might be a longer post next week, but either way I just wanted to say thank you for subscribing to this newsletter! I know it’s a little strange to be subbed to a family member or friends newsletter, but it does mean a lot to me.
